It might take you five minutes to read.

The benefit of taking this time is that  it has the power to radically improve your life.

Our society has been duped into thinking that there are painless, quick fixes and instant gratification. It seems as though virtually everyone has lost sight of the value of planned, consistent work.

How many times have you (or someone you know) quit doing something that is positive because you were impatient or maybe you hit a small obstacle?

I’ve seen some of our members at Texarkana Jiu Jitsu and Fitness quit after the first week of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or the first week of Cardio kickboxing or our Ultimate Body Shaping Course.

People often quit before they even get started.

They don’t understand the simple ‘secret’ that I’m about to explain below.

This secret is something so powerful that it can allow you to achieve every goal that you currently have, whether it’s to lose 20 pounds, earn a Black Belt, give up a bad habit, make more money, or anything else.

It’s a secret that Albert Einstein said (according to folklore, at least), is said to be the greatest invention in human history.

What’s the secret?

Small steps completed consistently over time allows you to accomplish anything. It’s the secret of compounded interest.

The formula is… small smart choices + consistency + time = radical difference.

The Power Of A Penny

Here’s the scenario. Let’s say you are offered a choice.

You can either take $3 Million in cash right now OR a single penny that doubles every day for 31 days… which would you choose?

The penny!

Why… because it is worth MUCH more money in the end, BUT it does take longer to see the pay off!

Let’s say in the example above, YOU take the instant cold, hard cash AND your friend takes the penny.

On day 7, you have (about) $3 Million and your friend only has 64 cents. Of course at this point you’re thinking, “My friend is an idiot. I really need to get smarter friends.”

On day 10, Your friend has $5.12 How is your friend feeling at this point? Your spending your millions and loving life while your friend is putting in the time and waiting patiently with very little to show for it.

On day 21, your friend has only $10,486 versus your BIG money. Your friend hangs tough…sacrificing, and gaining more each day

His money continues to grow while your money is being blown on vacation homes, fast cars, fancy tropical vacations, and partying.

As the month continues to tick away, the effect of compounding starts to pay off for them.

On day 31, your friend has $10,737,418.24! This is more than 3 times your original $3 million of which you’ve spent a sizeable chunk.

Whoops!

This is exactly why consistency over time is important and why negative choices don’t keep you still, they move you BACKWARDS.

There are few things in life that are as powerful as this compounding effect, hence the Einstein quote. Amazingly, you can harness this same compounding effect in every area of your own life.

Let’s use another example to illustrate the difference that consistent, directed effort makes over time.

In a practical way, everything that you do every single day can serve to make you better or make you worse.

You may be frustrated and want to lose the extra 20 pounds you’ve been carrying around the last few years, but those chocolate cupcakes sure look good with their seductive rainbow sprinkles.

Surely, one cupcake won’t ruin you.

The problem is that the compound effect works in a negative manner just like it does in a positive one.

The delicious cupcake moves you BACKWARDS.

You gain a little more weight, you get a little more fatigued, you are drawn a little closer to obesity and it’s devastating health effects (depression, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, etc)… AND most people make bad choices EVERY day making it impossible to achieve their goals.

It just happens so slowly that you don’t see it happening. It’s the compound effect of bad choices.

The same thing happens in a positive way when you make good choices EVERY day… you join our martial arts class AND show up to train.

The progress is slow at first.

You wonder, am I going to be able to do it?

You know about the magic power of compounding demonstrated in the penny example, so you hang in there.

You train Jiu Jitsu a couple of times a week. You start eating a little better each day.

A month passes and you’ve lost about 10 pounds.

You’re starting to feel better… you’re less stressed out, you have more energy, you’re just starting to feel better.

You continue training because you know that it’s consistency that really pays off.

Three months into training and you’ve lost 22 pounds. You haven’t looked this good since High School. By the way a student tells me this has happened to them on almost daily basis.

Let’s continue.

A year passes, you’ve earned a belt and look back on everything you’ve accomplished over the last year.

You’ve lost a lot of weight, you feel better, you’re less stressed, you have more energy, you’re getting along better with your family, and you’re healthier… PLUS, you have proven to yourself that you can accomplish something!

You compare your own progress to your friend, Bob.

Over the last year, Bob has gained another 12 pounds. He’s now 30 pounds over weight.

He hates his life. He’s stressed out and working on another heart attack.

We all make choices every day.

I think the biggest problem with our society in America right now is the inability of people to delay instant gratification.

Everyone wants the cupcake and they want it now, not worrying about the consequences that will occur later.

It’s what’s happening with our kids… they’re getting less fit, playing more video games, and losing the values of hard work… then most programs cater to the lowest common denominator instead of challenging them.

No child left behind?

It’s more like put the slowest kid in the front, so no one ever develops into a good runner.

This is why you see 5 year old kids in other martial arts with black belts.

They want this instant gratification instead of working hard and earning what they get.

This sets kids up for failure in life!

It’s also why our kids at Texarkana Jiu Jitsu are taking a different path.

Kids in our classes earn every stripe and every belt.

This teaches them discipline and goal setting that will serve them the rest of their life.

You can make a decision to change right now.

If you get 1% better every day, then at the end of the year you aren’t just 365% better because you get growth compounded on itself every day.

Goals… Go For It and Help Others!

Hitting Goals in Competition, Sport, and Lifehit your fitness, weight loss, and combat sport competition goals

A few weeks ago at Texarkana Jiu Jitsu, I was talking about competition and how people sitting on the sidelines can be critics without ever sacrificing anything to get into the ‘game‘ themselves.

Of course the game can be participation in any of the combat sports – Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), Judo, Wrestling, Kickboxing, Boxing, MMA, …

It can also be speaking more metaphorically about achievement and hitting our goals.

Worthwhile goals always require some risk. It takes overcoming challenges to accomplish anything worthwhile.

Far too often we find it easier to criticize others than do something challenging ourselves… by putting our own efforts on the line.

I mentioned this quote from a former President that sums it up better than I could have done.

The Man In The Arena, Theodore Roosevelt

It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better.

The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood.

Who strives valiantly.

Who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming… but who does actually strive to do the deeds, who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions, who spends himself in a worthy cause.

Who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.

It’s so much better to try, to get in the ‘game,’ than to sit on the sidelines and talk about the efforts of others.

I hope that we can ALL keep this in mind when we choose to do something, to try, when others sit around and criticize both setting the goal and our personal achievements… especially, when you realize that most people won’t ever even try to accomplish anything significant.

Maybe even more important, we can and should encourage others that are going for it.

We may have reservations about whether they’ll make it or not, but they are just a little more likely to accomplish their goal with you in their corner.

How To Achieve More In Life Through Martial Arts (Conor McGregor)

Martial Arts Are A Vehicle for Self Improvement.

Martial Arts training is associated with so many different benefits… getting in shape, self defense, sport competition, and the mental benefits of discipline, focus, perseverance, and more.

It’s the mental side that provides the greatest benefit for many kids and adults because the truth is that there are many ways to get in shape.

Our minds are much more powerful than we think and we can use this to our advantage to accomplish more at work, home, and on the mats in martial arts.

McGregor is certainly a black belt in the positive mindset.

What Conor McGregor has been able to accomplish in such a short period of time in the UFC (MMA) and now Boxing is incredible!

He does have some great physical attributes, but that isn’t what sets him apart. It’s how he thinks that made him a Champion.

The Background Story on McGregor

McGregor’s story is inspirational.

He went from welfare, relying on food stamps to eat to the UFC. He won his first UFC MMA match by knock out in just 67 seconds and earned a $60,000 Knockout of the Night bonus.

He went on to win many UFC bouts and became a 2 Division MMA Champion.

Not one to rest on his accomplishments, McGregor did the seemingly impossible. He was able to get a Boxing match with one of the greatest boxers that has ever lived, Floyd Mayweather.

Mayweather was 49-0 in professional boxing matches, an undefeated champion.

He lost the match, but even in defeat he won.

McGregor performed phenomenally well in the first 5 rounds against tough opposition.

He took Mayweather into the 10th round before losing to a ref stoppage. This was McGregor’s first professional boxing match.

McGregor took home an estimated $30 Million dollars for the match!

It wasn’t long ago that he was living on welfare in his native Ireland.

Positive Mindset Matters

You see so many positive memes on Facebook and other social media. These can be irritating at times.

The thing is I would much rather see them than all the negativity that spreads much fast on social media like wildfire.

The truth is that we all face hardship at many points in our life.

I’ve experienced many myself, just as you have undoubtedly faced a lot yourself.

Everyone does.

Looking at it objectively though, many people face massive hardship.

In these times, some people fold because the circumstances just seem insurmountable while others facing equally tough times (or even worse) come out of the hardship stronger and better than they went into it.

McGregor was on Welfare! He just earned a $30 million payday.

His strongest asset is his belief in himself. Others are arguably much more gifted physically than him but have not accomplished as much. This is true everywhere you look, in every field of work and in every sport.

The million dollar question is why do some give up while others use adversity to drive them?

It’s the internal mindset, what’s going on inside our heads that determines success or failure.

The little voice in our heads that tells us give up while the other voice says, you will make it through this and be stronger than before.

The voice that we choose to focus on is the one that has the most power over us.

The late, great Zig Ziglar said positive thinking won’t fix everything, but “Positive thinking will allow you to do Everything better than negative thinking will.”

You develop positive thinking in the same way you develop any habit. It’s through repetition and it can be difficult at first. Over time, the habit is strengthened and becomes a part of you (or your kids).

Tying this back to Jiu Jitsu, why does Jiu Jitsu help people accomplish more in life?

Jiu Jitsu is tough, no doubt about it.

As you begin training, there will be times that you are pushed beyond your comfort zone.

There are times when you will face adversity, to some degree it will happen daily on the mat.

You need this stimulus to grow. You must be pushed to see what you can accomplish.

This is true of both a child and an adult.

Jiu Jitsu challenges you.

You need to maintain a positive mindset as you face down each new challenge.

You don’t just quit when these challenges occur. You learn to face them and move forward.

Jiu Jitsu shows you that you can overcome challenges and can do far more than you believed was possible.

This is real confidence.

You begin to believe in yourself and what you can accomplish because you have proof that you can get past the obstacle, you’ve done it before so you know you can do it again.

The confidence to face a new challenge in life because you have faced down so many before on the mats.
