How To Stop Bullying in Texarkana

Texarkana Jiu Jitsu and Fitness · Mar 13, 2019 ·

Bullying is a problem for so many kids and can effect them for the rest of their lives.

We can’t help kids by hoping that other kids will do the right thing and stop.

Kids are empowered when they are confident. When they know that they can take care of themselves.

They no longer have to live in fear.

This makes all the difference.

Self confidence means they probably will never be bullied again.

They most likely will never have to have a physical conflict because the bullies lack self esteem and want an easy target.

Developing self confidence is the real key.

We’ve helped countless kids over the years overcome problems with bullying.

If your child is being bullied, put them in a program that teaches them how to handle a bully so they won’t have to live in fear.

If you want to find out more about our program, send us a message.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art that helps kids be able to defend themselves in the worst possible positions against bigger, stronger opponents.

Of course, the real benefit of training is knowing that they are no longer in danger, that’s self confidence.

We’re here to help!

Why Texarkana Kids Love Martial Arts

Kids Love Training Martial Arts In Texarkana kids love martial arts training at the best school in texarkana

You might think that kids want to learn martial arts because of the latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Movie or Lego’s Ninjago show they’ve watched…  or maybe you have spent some time watching some of the ‘old’ classics you watched growing up… Karate Kid, Chuck Norris, Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, or Jean Claude Van Damme.

The truth is that kids have always loved the martial arts and maybe even more so now.

They see a martial artist doing some cool move and they want to learn how to do it.

Kids also want to move and get some exercise. It’s just part of our innate blueprint, our DNA.

Kids have a lot of extra energy because they are designed to move… a lot!

Kids also want to train for many of the same reasons that their parents want them to train in martial arts… to develop confidence, focus, self control, and better social relationships… of course it helps that the training is a blast for them.

This is critically important.

As parents, one of the greatest things we want for our kids is to see them happy.

If they can have fun while improving their health, fitness, and mental outlook… all the better!

The environment that children face today is very different from what the last generation experienced.

The kids are spending a lot of time on electronic media.

The schools have been forced to cut their PE fitness programs to save money.

These are big problems for physical and mental development.

Times and technology are moving very fast.

These environmental changes have caused kids to mature a little faster and often at the expense of just being a kid.

They’re under more stress and don’t have as many physical outlets as we did in school growing up.

It is easy to see why martial arts benefits, like self discipline and confidence are so important to our children.

They also develop self defense skills that not only really boost their confidence, also gives them a sense of security and insulates them from bullying.

While it isn’t the only benefit of training, the ability to protect oneself from harm is critical to the child’s development.

kids heirarchy of needs self defense, security, self confidence, and achievement through texarkana kids martial arts

Dr. Abraham Maslow was a renowned psychologist that studied motivation and needs.

He created the hierarchy of needs that had 5 levels.

His theory states that we must satisfy the lower levels before we can move on to achieve higher level needs.

Maslow’s theory put security at the 2nd level, just after physiological needs like breathing, eating, and water.

This means that security is the foundation that all people required before moving to achieve the higher levels of humanity like love, confidence (he called self esteem), and self actualization.

The martial arts provide our kids with self defense techniques which enable them to concentrate on other areas of their lives.

Martial arts training like Jiu Jitsu offer so many benefits to kids from improving their fitness to self defense, confidence, and all the mental benefits that have traditionally been associated with martial arts.

Even better, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu offers kids the ability to defend themselves without ever having to hurt the other child.

Other arts teach predominately striking based solutions to self defense.

Many parents would prefer that their child doesn’t have to solve every conflict with a punch or kick to the face of another child.

In Jiu Jitsu, the kids learn how to control their opponent so that they are no longer a threat which is safer for both kids in most altercations.

Bullying, A Very Serious Problem

Texarkana Jiu Jitsu and Fitness · Jan 21, 2018 ·

Kids Are Being Bullied And It’s Effects Can Be Devastating.

Bullying Is Different From When We Were Kids.bullystop, prevent kid's bullying, confidence, self defense

It’s happening a lot more at school, but often kids can’t escape the torment because of the online world that now follows them everywhere.

Unfortunately  an alarming number of kids have their confidence destroyed causing severe emotional distress and in far too many cases it can be deadly.

According to bullyingstatistics.org the numbers are significant… but if it were only ONE, it would be one too many that was suffering.

“The statistics on bullying and suicide are alarming:  Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people, resulting in about 4,400 deaths per year according to the CDC.

For every suicide among young people, there are at least 100 suicide attempts.”

Bullying, Kids, and Schools

The schools can’t be held responsible for the majority of bullying problems.

There are just too many kids… but we can empower the kids.

I wonder how the parents will deal with the loss of their son.

It must be so incredibly difficult for them.

I can’t imagine losing my daughter and especially to suicide.

Every day, for the rest of their lives, the parents will question what they could’ve done differently.

Teddy Molina of Texas was a young bullied boy that took his own life in 2012.

The parents knew there was a problem with Teddy, but I’m sure that they had no idea of how bad it really was for him.

Not too long ago, one of the young teenagers in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class was attacked by 2 larger ‘boys,’ although one was apparently already out of high school.

Fortunately, he was able to fight off the attackers using his conditioning and jiu jitsu that he has developed training with us.

This is a serious problem.

Kids are bullied on a daily basis, often scarring the child for life and making them question their own self worth.

Other times, as seen with Teddy (one example of so many), the child can’t take it any more and ends their own life rather than have to continue to face their antagonists.

I’ve talked about other examples in the past of kids like Teddy that had the possibility of accomplishing so much in life, but now will not.

If you know of any child being bullied, maybe its your own, a friend’s or co-worker’s child, then please let me know.

The kids can develop confidence and feel empowered knowing that they have the ability to take care of themselves.

It doesn’t have to be so hard on them and we don’t need to lose even one more child.

Girl Defeats Multiple Boys In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Texarkana Jiu Jitsu and Fitness · Jan 16, 2018 ·

This YouTube video is amazing, check out how a young girl dominates an entire group of boys utilizing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an incredible martial art!

It is the best martial art for kids and could be the best thing that you ever do for your young girl (or boy!) because…

Our special training at Texarkana Jiu Jitsu is designed unshakable self confidence… this alone will prevent virtually all attacks and bullying!

The techniques are extremely effective in a self defense situation (and as the father of a young girl this is EXTREMELY important to me).

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques don’t require the child to hurt the other child, but allows your own child to dominate the bigger, stronger more aggressive bully or attacker and to place them into a position where they can no longer harm them.

The classes teach your child drive, determination, the ability to set and accomplish goals that will serve them for them for the rest of their life.

Your child will get into phenomenal shape and develop their true athletic potential that will enable them to perform better in every other sport.

The training is really FUN for the kids giving them something productive to do while getting them off the couch, video games, etc!

The kids make many new positive, encouraging friends… let’s face it, our kids aren’t always surrounded by the best influences.

Types of Combat Sports and Martial Arts

Texarkana Jiu Jitsu and Fitness · Nov 9, 2017 ·

The Combat Sports, MMA, Gracie Jiu Jitsu, and Jiu Jitsu in Texarkanatexarkana martial arts and combat sports training

In order to be extraordinary, you must not follow the ordinary path.

It makes sense.

All Martial Arts Offer Some Benefit for It’s Practitioners.

The style that you choose should suit what you want to accomplish with training.

Different styles appeal to people for different reasons.

This post will talk about some of the training differences from a broad perspective to help people understand different training methods.

It is not meant to be this art or style is better than another art.

Gracie Jiu Jitsu

The Gracies developing a system of martial arts that was grappling based contrary to the common wisdom of the time that grappling didn’t work in a fight. This idea went on the revolutionize the martial arts, combat arts and sports. The Gracies were the founders of modern MMA and the UFC.

They used the UFC to show the world how well Brazilian Jiu Jitsu performed in a very close to no rules fight against other skilled martial artists.

One of the Gracies, Royce Gracie, went on to win 3 out of the first 4 UFCs.

Martial Art Styles

If you’re thinking about training for yourself or your child, many different styles exist… Karate (like Shotokan), Tae Kwon Do, Krav Maga, Judo, Wrestling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Boxing, Kickboxing, Sambo, and other combat sports and martial arts.

By the way, I like to make this distinction in martial arts styles/systems.

You can break martial arts into two groups… the combat arts/sports and the ‘traditional‘ martial arts.

What’s the difference in these 2 Martial Arts categories?

Traditional Martial Arts

Traditional martial arts include tae kwon do, karate (like Shotokan karate and Kenpo karate), Japanese ju jitsu, Aikido, and others.

These martial arts are by in large a static system that was passed down through many years, often centuries.

These arts are generally a closed system of martial arts. The techniques do not generally change over time.

A large part of the practice in these styles consists of the practice of forms or kata. These are long sequences of movements that are memorized.

Presumably, the arts were taught that way because of limited written communication / reading. It was a way to pass on the techniques in this era.

They often incorporate weapons that were used centuries ago like the staff, nunchuks, or tonfa.

These arts do not typically spend much time in live drilling and sparring against a resisting opponent. It varies depending on the school.

The old school traditional arts tend to discourage much cross training in other arts, whereas some of the less traditional ones allow or at times encourage cross training. It depends on the art and the particular martial arts school/instructor.

Combat Martial Arts and Combat Sports

The combat arts include MMA, boxing, muay thai/kickboxing, judo, wrestling, sambo, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

These arts are not static.

These arts tend to be an open system of arts that change over time as new things are learned and improved on.

These arts are based more upon performance, that is being able to use the movements against a resisting opponent that has counter intentions of their own.

You see these arts as the primary styles that work in Mixed Martial Arts competitions like the UFC.

This type of training follows the line of thinking that if you want to learn how to swim, you’ll have to get in the water.

The benefits to training in combat arts like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is that participants develop…

  • the ability to use what they learn in a more realistic scenario.
  • improved fitness, endurance, and conditioning.
  • improved focus because the participant remains attentive and present in practice and training.
  • improved discipline in other areas of their life because participants want to perform better in their chosen sport and this causes them to evaluate if their lifestyle (habits, diet, exercise, …) will improve their performance or reduce it
  • Gain much better control of their emotions because anger and other negative emotions will cause them to perform poorly during training (and competition)
  • and the confidence that they can actually use the techniques against an attacker.

A very important added benefit to training in a grappling style like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is that participants are able to train without the repetitive head trauma that often occurs in the striking arts.

As we learn more about concussions, this is something that many are rightfully concerned with both for adults and especially for kids.

Plus, as far as kids go, the kids learn how to handle a bully or an attacker without having to resort to punching or kicking them.

Kids in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu learn how to control their aggressor without injuring them. This is particularly important with modern school policies punshing both students involved in a fight, regardless if it was simply from one bullying another.

There is some cross over between the 2 camps of martial arts at times and different martial arts schools may lean a little more towards performance or kata type training regardless of style depending upon the instructor.

However, this is a good way to intellectualize the difference between the various martial arts.
